The last shot reminded me of the movie, THE CELL - the purple cape scene inspired Grace Jones? Meh probably not.

There’s a special ring in hell for those people who remove source captions from pics. How fucking difficult is it to leave “Margot Robbie photographed by Miguel Reveriego for Vanity Fair ” on a pic??

One year ago a great visionary woman left our world.

Eiko Ishioka was a Japanese costume designer who won an Oscar for her Gothic designs for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Francis Ford Copola’s 1992 opera of sex and violence.

Her collaboration with director Tarsem Singh spanned 4 of his films and it is a legacy that will amaze for many years to come.

In Singh’s first feature, The Cell, (2000) Jennifer Lopez plays a psychologist trapped by a serial killer. Ishioka encased her into a rigid neck-brace, equally stylized and darkly erotic. “Jennifer asked me if I could make it more comfortable, but I said: ‘No you are supposed to be tortured’” Ishioka explained in 2000.

Her visual craft can be seen on three more of Singh’s pictures, the otherworldly costumes for The Fall (2006), mythological fantasy for the Greek Immortals (2011) and finally Mirror Mirror (2012) that won her a final posthumous Oscar nomination.

This is my little tribute to her genius with examples from her work from those five films in chronological order.

THE CELL (2000) “Where do you come from??!??”

This was the scene I mentioned earlier, this is a nice gif set but it still doesn’t do this scene any justice - find the movie, watch it.

costumefilms:

The Cell - Jennifer Lopez as Catherine Deane wearing a sheer black dress with metal-flake crimson, anatomical collar. The closure on the back was made of Velcro. A resin facemask with hopped, braided chain veil completed the costume designed by Eiko Ishioka.

Jen isn’t particularly fond of this role but that 3rd pic….she pulls off a malicious look that would make Stanley Kubrick proud. Jen’s so wrong she should be extremely proud of this film.

Also, I think Eiko may have drawn inspiration from Alexander McQueen’s mask for the one used on JLo

THE CELL - Sometimes there is art in horror films, this is one of those times.

Just a few of the costumes worn by Jennifer Lopez in THE CELL (2000). My faves are the 2nd one & the last one. Eiko Ishioka’s designs were flawless

The Cell (2000)

Some people got put off this movie because JLo was in it & because the story was “confusing” but it’s been 14yrs get over it. Tarsem Singh along with the costume director, Eiko Ishioka created a visual feast that deserves much more credit than it has been given.

this is art

Vincent D’Onofrio in THE CELL (2000) in one of my favorite scenes in the movie. Yes it’s a horror film, but my god when he walks down the stairs with that purple cape thing pierced into his back & it flows behind him…& it opens up filling the room…..it’s just beautiful y’all. I can’t say it enough.

Mr Vincent D’Onofrio - a truly fantastic actor (despite being on Law & Order Criminal Intent) superbly playing a sadistic serial killer in THE CELL (2000)
